Read through some of the most common questions about laser eye surgery

Laser eye surgery is a procedure which corrects eye conditions such as short sight, long sight and astigmatism. Laser technology is used to reshape the eye’s cornea, correcting any imperfections which may be affecting the vision and improving the eye’s ability to focus.

When carried out by a qualified ophthalmologist, laser eye surgery is considered an effective procedure which can give you clearer, sharper vision.

What happens during the surgery?

Laser eye surgery can be carried out on both eyes during the same procedure. Patients are usually given anaesthetic drops, so you won’t feel any discomfort. It normally takes around 20 minutes and the laser part of the surgery usually only takes around 2 minutes in total.  An overnight stay is not usually needed. You’ll need to have regular check-ups after the operations, to make sure the eye is healing as it should be.

Is laser eye surgery safe?

As with all surgical procedures, there is some risk, but the chances of complications with laser eye surgery are small. Complications happen in less than 1% of cases and if complications do happen, then most of the time they can be fixed with additional treatment.

Do Boots Opticians offer laser eye surgery?

We don’t currently offer the procedure, but our optometrists can discuss that option with you depending on your vision needs. Just ask your optometrist when you have your next eye test.

If laser eye surgery isn’t for me, what are my options?

Laser eye surgery might not be right for everyone. Your eyesight needs may be different, or you may feel uncomfortable about eye surgery. There are other options available to you and our optometrists would be more than happy to talk you through them to meet your needs.

Glasses and contact lenses are still great choices for vision correction because they’re safe, effective, and convenient. Many people find glasses easy to use, plus you can express your personal style with different frame colours, designs and brands. Contact lenses also help you to have clear and natural vision, and they’re great for sports or days when you don’t want to wear frames. Both options are non-surgical and come in many styles and technologies, making them reliable go-to solutions for sharp, comfortable vision. Find out more about our prescription glasses and contact lens options here.
